I wrote
last fall about Ask Eraser, a service that allows you to configure Ask.com
searches so that privacy is maintained. Google says they only keep data on
searches for 18-24 months. Unfortunately, this is all irrelevant if you forget
to clear your search history on your own computer, like Melanie McGuire, who was convicted last year
of murdering her husband after they found that she'd entered these search terms
into Google:
instant poisons
undetectable poisons
instant
undetectable poisons
pesticide as a poison
insulin as a poison
insulin
overdoses
toxic insulin levels
fatal insulin
doses
euthanasia
tranquilizers
barbiturates
state gun
laws
purchase guns
how to purchase guns
illegally
how to purchase guns illegally in NJ
how to purchase
hunting rifles in NJ
where to purchase guns without a permit
how to commit
murder
I got the list from last month’s
Harper’s. Of course, now I’ll be in
the search results for people searching these kinds of terms.
Great! I'll have to keep an eye on my analytics to see if I get a huge bump this week in my "scheming and murdering" readership.
