The iPhone all the rage. And many of the apps are entertaining, but lack "valuable" innovation. It is fun to have a light sabre, zippo lighter and bubble wrap on your iPhone. But is that innovation? While it is entertaining, I struggle to call it innovation. But I recently saw an announcement of an upcoming app from USAA that demonstrates some interesting innovation.
Imagine being able to deposit a check via your iPhone- yes, you heard me right. By taking a photo of both sides of the check and submitting to USAA, you can deposit the check. No need to take it to the bank. Now that assumes you are a customer of USAA and you are approved to perform the function. Check out the detail here.
So, while there is great anticipation in waiting for the next fun app, maybe something really important, like a pet rock (ok, if you are not old enough to know what I am talking about check it out -- and if you are old enough, admit it if you had one). But thankfully there will continue to be valuable innovation.
Great job USAA!
As far as I know USAA was the first (and maybe still the only?) bank to offer the ability to deposit checks online; they call it Deposit@Home. That, in itself, is/was revolutionary, but by taking it one step further and making the process mobility-enabled is setting the bar pretty high for their competitors. USAA has been my bank for years and I'm continually amazed at the innovative products they produce.
Are there any other banks trying to differentiate themselves by producing these "cool" features/products?

USAA, which has historically been known for a great service organization. Adding innovation to their strenghts makes them tough to beat.
Other banks are trying to use innovation to differentiate, but it is often a difficult road to travel for large banks. That means it is a great opportunity as a differentiator for those that can pull it off.

I read this article and think your post is terrific. Bank of America can’t even figure out how to transfer funds internally between their organization and a customer account…forget being able to deposit without ever visiting a branch or ATM or having to mail in the check. USAA is leaps and bounds ahead of BofA.

Is the IPhone bad for innovation? According to Harvard Law professor Jonathan Zittrain…Yes. In this compelling video from BNET, Zittrain walks us through the flow of innovation and demonstrates that while you may have the amazingly wonderful IPhone and I may have a dazzling app for it, we won’t be interacting without first identifying ourselves to Apple and gaining approval. He also reminds of some other innovative new platforms where unlike a truly open market a corporation still controls all engagement.
